Writing Research Aims, Objectives and Questions
The foundation everything else is graded against, how aims, objectives, questions and hypotheses differ and how to write them so your conclusion can answer them.
Aims, objectives and research questions are the foundation of a dissertation, and among the most commonly muddled. Get them precise and the whole project has direction. Get them vague and your conclusion has nothing definite to answer. Markers explicitly check whether your findings address exactly what you set out to investigate.
The Aim: One Sentence, Broad Direction
The aim is the overall purpose, what the study ultimately seeks to achieve, in a single sentence. "This study aims to examine how remote working affects employee retention in UK technology firms." It is broad but not vague. It names the phenomenon, the outcome and the context.
Objectives: Specific and Measurable Steps
Objectives break the aim into concrete, achievable steps, usually three to five. Each should start with an action verb reflecting the cognitive level required: identify, examine, evaluate, compare, determine. Together they should, if achieved, accomplish the aim.
1. To identify the drivers of retention reported in the literature.
2. To measure retention intention among remote workers in three firms.
3. To evaluate which drivers most strongly predict retention.
Write objectives to be measurable, vague verbs like "understand" or "explore" are hard to demonstrate you achieved.
Research Questions vs Hypotheses
Research questions express what you want to answer as questions and suit qualitative and exploratory work: "How do remote workers describe their reasons for staying?" A hypothesis is a testable prediction for quantitative work: "Remote workers with higher perceived isolation report lower retention intention." Use questions or hypotheses to match your methodology, not both loosely.
Alignment Is Everything
Aim, objectives, questions, methods, findings and conclusion must form one chain. Each objective should map to a method that produces findings that the conclusion then reports against. A quick test: read your objectives, then your conclusion headings, they should correspond one to one. If they drift apart, the project has lost coherence somewhere in between.
Common Errors
- Objectives that are really methods ("to conduct interviews").
- Unmeasurable verbs that cannot be demonstrated.
- Too many objectives, fragmenting the study.
- Questions and methods that do not match (qualitative questions, quantitative design).

- Is the aim a single, clear sentence?
- Are objectives specific, measurable and action-led?
- Do questions/hypotheses match the methodology?
- Does the conclusion map back to each objective?
- Could a reader tell from the objectives alone what I actually did?
- Is the scope bounded by population, setting and time frame?
Four Terms That Are Not Interchangeable
Students lose marks here for a mundane reason. They use the four words as synonyms, and the examiner cannot then tell what the study set out to do. Each term does a different job at a different altitude.

Note the last row carefully. Hypotheses belong to studies that test predictions. A qualitative study should not have them, and inserting them to look rigorous signals the opposite.
Verb Choice Is a Methodological Commitment
The verb in an objective tells the reader what you will do and, by implication, what method you must use. Choosing a vague verb hides the method. Choosing a precise one commits you to it.

Avoid "understand", "investigate" and "look at" as objective verbs. None of them tells anyone what you will actually do, and each will attract the same supervisor comment.
Worked Example: One Study, All Four Levels
Aim. To examine how first-generation undergraduates use university academic support services during their first year.
Objectives. (1) To identify which support services first-generation students use and at what points in the year. (2) To compare usage patterns with those of continuing-generation students. (3) To explore how students account for their decisions to seek or avoid support. (4) To develop recommendations for how services are timed and communicated.
Research questions. Which services do first-generation students use, and when? How does this differ from continuing-generation peers? What reasons do students give for seeking or avoiding support?
Three things are worth noticing. Every objective uses a precise verb. The objectives together deliver the aim and nothing beyond it. And each research question maps onto an objective, so the reader can see the architecture without being told about it.
Bounding the Scope
An aim that names no boundaries invites an examiner to imagine a much larger study than you conducted, and to mark the gap. Three boundaries do most of the work.
- Population: who exactly. "First-year undergraduates at one UK institution", not "students".
- Setting or context: where, and under what conditions.
- Time frame: the period covered, which matters more than students expect for anything policy-related.
Adding these makes the aim longer, and that is the right trade. A bounded aim is a promise you can keep.
SMART, Applied Honestly

The relevance test removes more objectives than any other. Projects accumulate objectives that were interesting at proposal stage and now fragment the study. Cutting one is usually an improvement.
Alignment Runs Through the Whole Dissertation
Aims and objectives are not a formality confined to chapter one. They are the spine, and examiners test alignment along the entire length.

A quick diagnostic. If a section of your literature review does not serve an objective, either the objective is missing or the section is. Both are worth finding before submission.

Where Ethical Support Fits
This is one of the highest-value things to discuss with a supervisor, because a misaligned aim propagates through every later chapter and is expensive to fix afterwards. Asking whether your objectives are achievable with your access is exactly the right question to bring to supervision.
What stays yours is deciding what the study is for. The aim expresses your judgement about what is worth knowing, and that judgement is what the degree assesses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both objectives and research questions?
Departments differ. Some want objectives only, some questions only, many want both. Check the handbook. Where both are required, keep them mapped one to one where you can.
How many objectives is right?
Three to five suits most dissertations. Fewer can look thin, more usually means the study is trying to do several things at once.
Can objectives change during the project?
Yes, and they often should as the work develops. What matters is that the final submission is internally consistent, so update every chapter that refers to them.
Should the aim appear in the abstract?
Yes, usually as the purpose sentence, though phrased for a reader rather than copied verbatim.
What is the difference between an aim and a research problem?
The problem is the situation that makes the study worth doing. The aim is what you will do about it. The problem justifies, the aim commits.
Where should they appear in the dissertation?
At the end of the introduction, after the context has been set and the gap established. Stating them before the reader knows why they matter weakens both.
